Opportunities for Engagement Winter/Spring 2023

Sacred Seeing: Photography as Spiritual Practice.

Do you enjoy taking photos with your cell phone as you wander around? Are you looking to deepen your sense of spirituality with a new spiritual practice?? Did it ever occur to you that your cell phone camera can be a window to wonder?

We are offering a course called “Sacred Seeing: Photography as a Spiritual Practice.” This 6-week course beginning in Feb (in-person) is an opportunity to explore the process of using photography as a way to slow down, to notice things we often miss, and to see deeply with the “Eyes of the heart.” This course will take the focus away from product and put it squarely on process; images are viewed as reflections of an inner process, a window into who you are.  I intend to take you WAY beyond the usual expectations of taking “beautiful photos“ to a deeper understanding of images as worshipful reflection.

Through creative exercises, we’ll explore the dance of light and shadow, play with ambiguity and mystery, consider things hidden and revealed in our images, and be inspired to see the sacred all around us. We will use our images as windows to reveal what is within and beyond what is often just simply seen. We will cultivate a practice to slow down and explore ourselves as spiritual beings.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction with Rev. Catherine Cullen

The still, small voice is with you whether you are racing through your busy days or sitting in meditative silence or contemplative prayer. Spiritual direction is for anyone who is searching for deeper spiritual insights and for spiritual growth in the events of our hectic daily lives. You can use your time in spiritual direction to slow down, to learn how to listen, to explore life’s deeper issues and to make progress toward achieving greater consistency between your deeply held values and your actions. This fall Catherine is offering Individual Spiritual Direction (participants meet with Catherine once a month for an hour or so). Contact Catherine via email at TheRevCatherine@aol.com or call her here at the church (781)934-6532 ext 3, to learn more about this unique ancient spiritual practice. May this be the year you explore more deeply the spiritual meaning of your life!

Women’s Connect Group

The 1+ Widows’ group is a social group for any woman who has lost her spouse or partner. We go out to dinner once a month and have other activities in between. If you would like to be included on the Google group for this women’s group to keep informed of our activities, please email ruthowendre@gmail.com. The group is open to all members and friends, and friends of friends of First Parish Church.

Introduction to Unitarian Universalism

If you are new to First Parish, we’d like to invite you to participate in our Spring 2022 Introduction to UU  session led by Rev. Catherine Cullen.  This is an overview offered to newcomers as part of their exploratory process.  It provides an opportunity to share in dialog with Rev. Cullen, and to get to know others new to the First Parish community.  You will learn about our liberal religion and discover options for finding community, spiritual growth and service within First Parish.
